How Long Does Furnace Installation Take?

analog-clock-face

A furnace, depending on the type and how well you care for it, may last fifteen or twenty years or even a little bit more! That means that furnace installation is not something you deal with every day. But it’s definitely something we do every day! If you have furnace installation questions, such as how long the process will take and what you can do to prepare, read on for our answers!

Who Installs My Furnace?

You need to have your new heating system installed by qualified HVAC technicians. That’s how to keep it under warranty. It will also dramatically reduce the repair needs the system will have over its lifetime, because many furnace issues are ultimately caused by improper, amateur installation. Always rely on the pros!

What’s Involved in Furnace Installation?

The technicians will arrive, assess, and explain their plan to you. They’ll make space to work, turn off and disconnect your old heating system, and move it out of the way. They’ll bring in, connect, and turn on the new one. They’ll let it run for a bit, making sure everything is working perfectly, before they tidy up, hand you your owner’s manual, and say goodbye.

How Long Does Furnace Installation Take?

It’s best if you can plan to be available for the entire day of your installation appointment. You don’t want to be stressed, and you certainly don’t want your technicians rushing! If you require multiple days of appointments, you’ll know that in advance. This can occur when you’re having ductwork replaced, or changing from an electric furnace to another fuel source like natural gas.

Most of the time, the job can be done in eight hours. However, you can cut that time down by doing some of their work ahead of time, yourself. No, we’re not suggesting you disconnect your old heating system, or do any other DIY HVAC work! That’s not safe. We’re suggesting that you prepare the space for the technicians.

How Can I Prepare for Furnace Installation?

First, consider their approach to your home, the best place to park, and how they’ll get to whichever door would be best to bring large equipment through. Make sure it will be an easy path for them to take! Clear away bicycles, birdbaths, ladders, logs—anything that could get underfoot or be hard to move around.

Second, consider the indoor access. From that door, how will they get to the location of the furnace? Again, tidy up or move away any obstacles. Also clear the work area around the furnace, which should always have a five-foot clear space around it for safety reasons, anyway.

Finally, we’d like to mention pets. As lovely as they can be, they can also get underfoot. And sometimes a process like this, with strangers in the home, is stressful to them! It will be quicker and simpler for the technicians to complete your installation if you put your pets in a closed room during the time of your appointment.
